ELL Program

For students whose foundational English skills in*listening, speaking, reading, and writing are not yet sufficient to participate successfully in U.S. middle and high school academic courses, Taiwan Adventist International School (TAIS) offers a dedicated English Language Learner (ELL) Program for both junior and senior high school students. Students applying for admission will complete an English proficiency assessment covering grammar, writing, reading, and vocabulary. The results are used to determine the appropriate level of English instruction and course placement. Students who demonstrate a lower level of English proficiency will initially be placed in the English Language Learner (ELL) Program based on their individual language needs. The program is designed to strengthen the academic English skills students need to transition successfully into regular U.S.-curriculum courses.

01Jr High English Language Learning Program

This course is designed to provide supplementary English proficiency training for middle school students (Grades 7 and 8) whose English levels do not yet meet the requirements for the full-credit high school curriculum they intend to pursue later. The curriculum aims to prepare students to complete the U.S. middle school program and ensures they possess the necessary competence to enter any U.S. high school, including TAIS. Regarding scheduling, students take this ELL foundational course concurrently with their regular middle school classes; it is integrated into the weekly schedule rather than requiring additional class time.

02High School English Language Learning Program

High School Students (Grades 9–12) requiring the ELL (English Language Learner) foundational course will take a program covering six key areas—grammar, writing, listening, speaking, reading, and vocabulary—over the course of a semester. TAIS will design a personalized curriculum for each student based on their proficiency, schedule, and high school credit requirements. Students in Level 1 of the ELL foundational course will have Physical Education, Music, Chinese, and Life & Interpersonal Relationships Education included in their schedules. Students in Level 2 will have the flexibility to take additional credit-bearing courses, such as Algebra I or II, Geometry, Earth Science, Computer Science, Digital Compositing, and Health. Students must complete the ELL foundational course before advancing to other credit-bearing academic courses.

Students enrolled in foundational English courses will be re-assessed at the end of each semester to determine the appropriate placement for the next stage of study. Placement decisions will be based on both language proficiency and academic performance, with any class transfers or level advancements taking place at the start of the semester. Students who achieve a proficiency level of CEFR B2 or higher will no longer require ELL support.
